PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team gave the No. 14 team in the country all it could handle and more on Friday night before falling 7-6 at Franklin Field. Freshman attack Mike Galione tallied a career-high five assists on the evening.
The Quakers, riding the momentum of back-to-back wins over Duke and Bucknell, answered a Ryan Hansen goal (Will Heffernan assist) to start the game with five straight goals of their own to take a 5-1 advantage into the second period.
From there, the Leopard defense, playing without co-captain Jon Marcek, responded, holding Penn scoreless throughout the entire second period. The only goal of the quarter came from Lafayette, a Heffernan tally from Galione with 2:04 left in the half.
After the Quakers built the lead back to four (6-2) with 13:45 left in the third quarter, the Leopards began their run.
Even-strength goals from Doug Prusoff, Colin Serling and Alex Floeck, along with a man-up goal from senior Tyler Silvey with 6:45 left in regulation tied the game at six.
Galione assisted on all five goals throughout the run, giving the freshman a career-high in just his fourth goal for the Leopards.
With the game tied at six, the Quakers regained the lead with 3:58 remaining, and despite one last man-up opportunity in the final 30 seconds of the contest, Lafayette fell 7-6 at Franklin Field.
For the third consecutive game, freshman goalkeeper Andrijko Andrusko tallied double-digit saves (15).
Senior co-captain Cesar Munoz was 7-for-15 from the face-off X, including a perfect 3-for-3 in the final quarter.
Lafayette will take the week to prepare for its first Patriot League contest of the 2011 season next Saturday when the Leopards travel to Navy. Face-off is set for 12 p.m. from Annapolis, Md. Leopard fans not making the trip can listen to the game live on LSN All-Access beginning at 11:55 a.m.
