EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team scored six goals in the second half against Columbia, but the Lions outscored the Leopards by two in the opening half defeating the Maroon and White 13-11 on Wednesday night at Rappolt Field.
Lafayette won the draw control battle with 14 to Columbia's 12. The Leopards, also held the advantage in ground balls (23-17), led by Caitlin Mitchell's team-high five. Freshman Ana White won seven draw controls for the Leopards.
Columbia (2-8) opened the game with a 4-0 run over the first 17 minutes of the half. Sophomore Addie Godfrey stopped the run on a free position goal at the 12:16 mark.
After a fifth Lion goal, senior co-captain Lauren Brown came from behind the goal and found an open Laura Kleiber who netted the goal at 8:22. Seventeen second later, sophomore Katie Leto scored on a free position shot to cut into the lead, 5-3.
The Lions scored to take a three-point lead at the 6:33 mark, but Lafayette (2-11) came back with two back-to-back goals to get within one. White scored after a Columbia turnover at 4:46 and Cammie Linville scored on a free position shot with 3:18 left on the clock.
Columbia scored their final goal of the half with 22 seconds left on the clock and went into intermission with a 7-5 lead.
Forty-five seconds into the second half Godfrey netted a goal to bring the Leopards within one, 6-7.
Columbia put together a 6-0 run over the next 12 minutes to give the Lions a 13-6 lead. The Lafayette defense came together in the final 14 minutes of the game keeping Columbia scoreless, while the Leopard offense went to work scoring five straight.
Midfieler Jessica Rothstein and White each scored two goals while Godfrey scored the fifth in the run. It was not enough as Columbia picked up their second win of the season as time expired on the clock.
Columbia's goalkeeper, Karlee Blank, made 14 saves in the cage for the Lions, while junior Alexa Biale and freshman Meghan Curtin split time in the net making three saves for Lafayette.
The Leopards hit the road for a Patriot League match-up against Colgate on Saturday at 1 p.m.
