LEWISBURG, Pa. - Lafayette softball split a pair of one-run games on Sunday, beating host Bucknell 5-4 in the opener while dropping the nightcap 1-0.
In the first game, Stacey Dorn doubled home a run and Lauren Murphy (3-for-3) singled home what stood up as the game-winning run in the decisive fifth inning.
Lafayette never trailed, pushing across a run in the first inning. Mary Episcopo reached with a lead-off single. Lauren Hasson sacrificed her to second for Stacey Kushner smacked a single through the right side.
Hasson took care of the Leopards' offense in the third inning with her second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.
Bucknell tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning on Alison Ford's two-run home run. The Leopards re-rook the lead in the fourth, plating a run on Gwen Turner's single.
The Bison added a single run in the fourth and six innings, but the Leopards and starting pitcher Melissa Robinson held on for the victory. Robinson surrendered four runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Alex MacLean (6-16) struck out seven, allowing five runs on nine hits.
In the night cap, the only run of the game was scored in the bottom of the second. Jessie Snyder, who had three hits in the contest, singled and drove home Kathryn Wilkinson.
Lafayette managed to put just two runners into scoring position in the game while leaving six on base in total. Turner had two of the Leopards' six hits. Bucknell left 11 on base against Robinson (4-12) who started and finished both games of the doubleheader. Robinson scattered eight hits on one run with two walks and a strikeout. Bridget Gates (6-14) got the victory, surrendering just six hits with six strikeouts and a walk.
Lafayette (5-34, 2-12) and Bucknell (12-30, 4-10) will close out the series on Monday with a doubleheader beginning at 12:15 p.m.
