NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Iona took both ends of Wednesday's softball doubleheader, beating the Leopards 4-0 in the opener and 8-2 in the nightcap.
The Gaels grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fourth of the opener when Katie Jansson, who had reached on an error, was doubled home by Allyssa James. Iona padded its lead the next inning, again taking advantage of a Lafayette error. Chelsea Sheehan stole home on a double steal and Peterson's groundout put Iona ahead 3-0.
Sheehan played a role in Iona's final run of the game in the home half of the sixth, singling on a 3-2 pitch to score Tierney Markou.
Stacey Kushner (single), Kristin Garganio (single) and Stacey Dorn (double) accounted for the Leopards' three hits.
Lauren Hasson took the loss, throwing five innings during which she surrendered no earned runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Alyssa Maiese collected the win, striking out nine with two walks.
In the second game of the twinbill, Lafayette got on the board early, pushing across a run in the first with Kushner's RBI sac bunt that scored Gwen Turner.
The advantage was short-lived, as the Gaels scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Maiese's nine-pitch at-bat ended with an RBI-single. Petersen scored on a passed ball and Maiese (4-for-4, 2RBI) came plateward on a wild pitch for the 3-1 lead.
Iona (19-17) tacked on three more in the fifth inning on Melanie Gettins three-run home run. The Leopards rallied for a run in the top of the seventh. The Leopards loaded the bases with one out. Madeline Allen's fielder's choice ran the final to 8-2.
The Leopards were held to three singles with Carly Feiro responsible for two and Dorn for the other.
