HAMILTON, N.Y. - Colgate claimed both games of Lafayette's softball's Patriot League doubleheader on Saturday, winning the first game 1-0 and the second outing 4-3.
The first-place Raiders scored all of the offense of the opener in the first inning. Nicole Siedhof (3-for-3) singled home Alana Dyson, who had reached on a lead-off single, for the only run of the game.
Colgate (24-18, 15-2) starting pitcher Rachel LeCoq surrendered just one hit in seven innings, retiring eight of the first 10 batters. Mary Episcopo led off the game with a walk and later broke up the no-hitter in the third inning with a single to right center. She was cut down trying to stretch that hit into a double.
LeCoq (15-7) did not allow a base runner in the final four innings, striking out 11 for the game with one walk. Lafayette starter Melissa Robinson scattered seven hits in six innings in the loss.
In the nightcap, Colgate never trailed. Tera Vaughn plated Dyson to take the 1-0 advantage in the first. The Raiders padded the lead with a run in the fourth frame to lead 2-0.
The Leopards tied the game in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Robinson (single) and Gwen Turner (sac fly) each knocked in runs.
Siedhof came through again for the Raiders in the fifth, driving in Vaughn with a sac fly to lead 3-2.
The back-and-forth campaign saw the Leopards re-tie the game in the sixth. Stacey Kushner's one-out double allowed Stacey Dorn (single) to score her and tied the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the inning, the Raiders had back-to-back doubles by Jennifer Martin and Haley Fleming to take the lead for good. Robinson pitched her way out of the inning, ending it with a groundout, strikeout and flyout while stranding a runner at third base.
LeCoq came on in the seventh to strike out the side and earn her second save of the season. Courtney O'Donnell (9-9) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits in the win. Robinson (6-14) surrendered three earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts.
Lafayette (7-36, 4-14) and Colgate wrap up the series on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
