EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team played until the final seconds of the game, but it was not enough as the Leopards fell 10-9 to American on Saturday afternoon in Fisher Stadium.
American took an early 1-0 lead five minutes into the opening half before standout freshman Ana White scored for the Leopards on a free position shot to tie the game at 1-1 with 16:36 on the clock.
After an Eagle goal, sophomore Caitlin Mitchell caused an American turnover and classmate Addie Godfrey took advantage and netted at goal at the 13:22 mark.
Lafayette took the lead when Ana Drehwing found an open Meg Ohlmacher who sent the ball past American's Kaska Komosinski, Leopards led 3-2 with 12:09 left in the half.
American took a 6-3 led on a 4-0 run over the next five minutes. Sophomore Jessica Rothstein stopped the run with a Leopard goal at the 3:18 mark after a second attempt at the goal.
With two minutes left on the clock in the opening stanza, the Eagles were able to add to their lead and take a 7-4 edge going into halftime.
Six minutes into the second half, freshman Laura Kleiber netted a goal to cut into the American lead, 7-5. The goal came after an American turnover and yellow card and the midfielder scored on the man-up opportunity.
Seconds later, the Eagles Bernadette Maher scored on a free position shot and at 21:20 American added a second goal to lead 9-5.
At the 15:48 mark, freshman Meghan Curtin made a save for the Leopards and Rothstein picked up the ground ball for Lafayette to set up its offense. Godfrey found Drehwing in front of the goal to cut the lead to three, 9-6.
A minute later Drehwing scored her second goal of the afternoon to put the Leopards within two with 13:07 left on the clock.
The American offense controlled the ball to run the clock down for five minutes before the Eagles scored their 10th goal of the day from Lisa Schaaf.
The Leopards scored two back-to-back goals, the first coming at the 4:04 mark from sophomore Katie Leto and Godfrey scoring the second at 2:38.
After the Godfrey goal, White won her fifth draw control for the Leopards. Lafayette took two shots at the goal, one going wide and the second saved by American.
With 48 ticks left on the clock, Rachel Martin caused an American turnover to give the Leopards a chance to tie the game. Lafayette turned the ball over with 33 second left on the clock. The Maroon and White would not give up as Kleiber forced an Eagle turnover with eight second left but it was not enough as time expired.
Junior Alexa Biale started in goal for the Leopards making five saves while Curtin picked up two. American's Komosinski made seven saves in goal for the Eagles.
American edged out Lafayette, 24-21, in ground balls and won 13 draw controls to the Leopards eight.
Lafayette is back in action on Wednesday as the Leopards take a break from Patriot League play to host Columbia at Rappolt Field. Face off is set for 7 p.m.
