EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette field hockey team lost a defensive battle on Friday night, falling 1-0 to Drexel in Philadelphia. The loss drops the Leopards to 2-4 on the season while Drexel improves to 5-2 overall.
"There were some bright spots for us in the game," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "We had good goaltending from both keepers, our defensive structure has improved and we created a number of good scoring opportunities. We need to be more effective on our penalty corner execution."
Mara Kish split the goaltending duties with Jessica Deutsch in game, with Kish making one save in a clean first half.
At the 49:28 mark, Christina Conrad broke the stalemate when she beat Deutsch for the game's only goal. Conrad's tally was assisted by Emily Beamesderfer and proved to be enough for the Dragons and goaltender Kim Chiarelli who made four saves. Deutsch made six second half saves and was charged with the loss.
Lafayette had the advantage in penalty corners, earning eight compared to three for Drexel. The Leopards were unable to capitalize on their opportunities in the first half, when they had five corners.
Freshman Kelsey Mead led the team with three shots and two on goal. Brittany Blass also added two shots in the game.
Lafayette's next game is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rappolt Field. The Leopards welcome Vermont to Easton for a non-conference matchup.
