EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette field hockey team dropped a tough 2-1 contest to No. 16 Albany on Sunday afternoon at Rappolt Field. Albany scored the game-winner with 1:31 left in the game, improving its record to 7-3, while the loss moves Lafayette to 3-5 overall.
"It was disappointing to lose at the end, especially when we created good chances for ourselves in the last 12 minutes," head coach Andrew Griffiths said. "It's just a matter of us finishing those opportunities."
The Maroon and White struck first in the contest when Carolyn Cabrey scored at the 15:41 mark of the first half. The goal was a direct result of a penalty corner, set up by Brittany Blass' initial shot that was saved by Albany goalkeeper Kristi Troch. The rebound bounced in the air and was knocked into the cage by Cabrey, for her fourth tally of the season.
Mara Kish did not face any shots in goal in the first 35 minutes as the Lafayette defense kept Albany from putting the ball on target.
In the second half, Albany evened the score on a penalty stroke by Corrine McConville. The Great Danes earned the stroke at the 52:32 point and the goal was McConville's ninth of the year.
Following a Lafayette corner, the Great Danes capitalized on an odd-man rush when Daphne Voormolen took a shot that was turned away by Kish, but then one-timed into the cage by Christina Patrick. Patrick's marker was the difference in the game and was her sixth of the season.
Albany had the advantage in shots, 7-3, and the Leopards earned three corners compared to one for the Great Danes. Kish made three stops in goal, while Troch turned two Lafayette shots away.
"Overall I thought it was a very strong team performance against an excellent Albany team, Griffiths stated. "It's great preparation as we head into Patriot League play. I feel confident because we are playing well in all areas of the field."
Lafayette returns to action on Oct. 1 in Hamilton, N.Y. against Colgate. The contest is the first Patriot League matchup of the season for the Leopards.
