AMBLER, Pa. - A penalty kick in the 61st minute by Cody Calafiore accounted for all of the scoring as the Lafayette men's soccer team was edged by Temple, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in Ambler, Pa.
With the loss, the Leopards fall to 1-1-0. Temple opens its season at 1-0-0 with the narrow victory. The result was similar to the matchup between these two teams in Easton last season, in which a penalty kick gave the host Leopards a 1-0 win in the 2010 Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic.
Lafayette outshot the Owls, 13-9, including strikes on goal by senior Eli Hajjar and freshman Chandler Fraser-Pauls. Senior Graham Heydt went the distance in goal and made two saves in the loss. The Leopards are yet to allow a goal in play this season, though opponents are 2-for-2 on penalty kicks.
Bobby Rosato earned the win in net for the Owls, stopping both shots on target from the Lafayette offense.
The deciding penalty kick, which came about due to a foul in the box by the Leopards, came at the 60:12 mark. The PK was the only the shot on goal for the Owls in the second half, as the Lafayette defense did its part to attempt and facilitate the equalizing strike. The Temple backline was equally as impressive, however, as the Leopards could not muster a shot on goal for the final 30 minutes of the contest.
Lafayette will stay on the road this week for a 7 p.m. match at Cornell on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Action returns to the pitch at Oaks Stadium on Friday and Sunday with the 2011 Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic.
