EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette field hockey team dropped its second game in two days, losing 3-2 in overtime at Harvard. Bridget McGillivray scored her second goal of the game 10:20 into the extra session, to propel the Crimson to victory. McGillivray's tally was a redirection off a shot from Georgia McGillivray, on a penalty corner.
"This is a very disappointing loss for us, no way around it," said head coach Andrew Griffiths. "Harvard is a good team and we were able to create a significant number of attacking opportunities, but could not finish the deal."
The Leopards (0-2) scored the game's first goal 10:26 into the first half when Kelsey Mead scored on a breakaway, beating Harvard goalkeeper Cynthia Tassopoulos.
Harvard (2-0) evened the score 14:13 into the first half when Noel Painter collected a rebound off a corner and beat Lafayette goaltender Mara Kish. The Crimson added another goal as a result of a corner when Bridget McGillivray fed Sydney Jenkins 20:55 into the contest, giving Harvard a 2-1 lead.
Senior co-captain Carolyn Cabrey scored her first goal of the season at the 60: 31 mark, deflecting a Maria Machalick strike into the cage to tie the game and eventually send the game into overtime.
Kish made 10 saves in the cage for the Leopards, while Tassopoulos made nine stops for Harvard.
Lafayette held a slim advantage in shots in the contest, 21-20 and penalty corners, 14-10.
"We only scored on one of our 14 penalty corners, which needs to improve drastically," stated Griffiths.
The Leopards next game is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 7:00 p.m. when they host Temple at Rappolt Field.
