EASTON, Pa. - After learning it qualified for the Patriot League Tournament following American's victory over Holy Cross earlier in the afternoon, the Lafayette men's soccer team solidified its postseason position with a 1-0 victory over Bucknell in overtime.
Tom McCutcheon's goal nine seconds into overtime gave Lafayette the win after the two sides played to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes. The goal came after Lafayette was awarded possession to start the extra session and deflected off of McCutcheon and a Bison defender before finding its way behind goalkeeper Mike Lansing.
Lansing finished with three saves for Bucknell, while Lafayette goalie Nathan McDonald made two saves in his seventh clean sheet of the season.
Lafayette finishes the regular season with a 7-7-4 overall record and a 3-1-3 Patriot League mark. Depending on other results around the League, the Leopards will play in the second semifinal as the No. 2 seed against third-seeded Colgate at American's Reeves Field on Friday, Nov. 9. Kickoff from Washington, D.C. is scheduled for 2 p.m. American will play the No. 4 seed Bucknell at 11 a.m.
Prior to the game the Lafayette Men's Soccer Class of 2013 was honred as part of the program's Senior Day celebration. Kyle Scharfenberg, Zach Winthrop, Josh Brown, Sean Peckham, Rob Bedson and Blake Fink each started their final game at Oaks Stadium. The group has combined for 34 wins and a 21-7-5 record at home.
