EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team was the second part of an afternoon doubleheader on Saturday at Rappolt Field and much like the Leopard women, the men used a quick start to grab a season-opening victory over Providence.

Senior Colin Serling got Lafayette going just 46 seconds into the contest, dodging to the right before roping a shot in the upper left corner of the cage to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.

Less than six minutes later, sophomore midfielder John Floyd found senior Will Heffernan next to the cage for a 2-0 advantage with 8:34 left in the opening period.

Two more assisted goals closed out the first quarter scoring for the Leopards, the first a Jake Mann tally (Greg Allis assist) followed by behind-the-back goal from freshman Cory Scheuerle, his first collegiate goal.

Scheuerle's goal was assisted by fellow classmate Brian Bock, the first of his first assists on the afternoon.

Providence ended the first quarter scoring, finding the back of the net with 45 seconds remaining in the opening frame, as Lafayette took a 4-1 lead into the second period.

A see-saw second quarter saw Providence cut the Leopard lead to two (4-2) on a man-up goal at the 8:05 mark.

However, Lafayette responded quickly, as Heffernan found his classmate Doug Prusoff at even-strength to push the lead back to three (5-2) with 6:34 until halftime.

The Friars ended the first half scoring with eight seconds left, as the Leopards walked into intermission holding a 5-3 lead.

Much like the first half, Lafayette came out from the half's opening face-off and delivered two goals to open up the game. An unassisted tally from Allis and man-up goal from Heffernan (Bock assist) once again push the lead back to four (7-3) with 5:09 remaining in the third quarter.

Providence answered with their own man-up goal before the Leopards sealed the game with a 3-0 run to end the third and open the fourth quarter.

An unassisted goal from Serling and two consecutive goals from Heffernan (both Bock assists) capped off the Lafayette scoring and sealed a 10-5 season-opening win.

Lafayette outshot Providence 28-24 and was 2-for-3 on man-advantage opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Jake Hyatt racked up 10 saves in his first collegiate start as a Leopard.

Lafayette will ride the momentum into practice for the week to prepare for a contest at Binghamton next Saturday, Feb. 25. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. in Vestal, N.Y.
