Lehigh Takes Two From Lafayette Softball

Box Score Game 1 | Box Score Game 2

EASTON, Pa. - Lehigh claimed both games of a softball doubleheader vs. Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at a chilly Metzgar Fields. In game one, Lehigh broke out for five runs in the first inning and never looked back on the way to an 8-1 decision. In the nightcap, Lehigh's Jen Colquhoun drove in seven runs with a grand slam and a three-run homer in a 9-0 win.

The Mountain Hawks (17-13, 2-0) sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the first inning of the first game and banged out five runs on five hits. Julie Fernandez and Emma Capetz each doubled home runs.

The Leopards' offense broke through in the fourth inning. With two outs and Amy Gebhardt aboard via a fielder's choice, Madeline Allen and Kristen Berger each drew walks to load the bases. Gwen Turner's swinging bunt left the Lehigh defense with no play for the Leopards' lone run of the afternoon.

Lehigh responded with two scores in the top of the next inning and one more in the seventh to advance to the 8-1 win. Jordan Parsons and Turner had two hits apiece for the Leopards while Lehigh's Liz Lucas drove in three runs on a pair of hits.

Rebecca Bliss (6-5) claimed the victory, allowing one run on six hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Melissa Robinson (3-8) was saddled with the loss, throwing all seven while giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with six walks and one strikeout.

In the second game, Colquhoun cracked open a scoreless contest with a grand slam in the fourth inning. The Mountain Hawks, who batted around the order, loaded the bases again later in the inning. Tenley Halaquist (3-for-3) singled up the middle to drive in two more runs and hand Lehigh a 6-0 lead.

In the fifth, Lehigh put away the game with three runs thanks to Colquhoun's three-run shot to left.

The Leopards (4-14, 0-2) batted in the bottom of the fifth but could not get to starter Emily Bausher. Bausher allowed only two hits (to Stacey Dorn and Allen) in five innings. She struck out eight and walked one. Lafayette starter Alex Campanaro (1-4) was tagged with the loss, surrendering nine runs on 13 hits with one strikeout.

The two teams will be back at it on Sunday beginning at noon. Watch all of the action on GoLeopards.com
