Lafayette/Lehigh Dual Meet Results

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -The men's track & field team had an exciting finish and gave the Lafayette squad a split decision versus rival Lehigh University on Saturday afternoon. This success at Rauch Field House came on the same weekend that the men's and women's basketball teams swept the Mountain Hawks.

The men had to win the final two events to win the meet, and did so for a final score of 91-89. The combination of freshman Jarrel Bobb, juniors Neil Franzese and Bill Leonard, and senior Nick Heppwon the 4x400m relay easily with a time of 3:24.09 - a whole six seconds better than the Lehigh relay team.

Hepp also won the 400m race for Lafayette with a time of 50.05.

The 4x800m race followed, and junior Derrick Hargwood, freshman Matt McMurray, and seniors Dayne Mosconi and Chris Parker took first place in a time of 8:02.11 to give the Lafayette men the victory.

Parker, along with anchoring the 4x800, also won the mile with a mark of 4:18.15 and the 800m in 1:56.21.

Wins by senior Nick Orzol in the 60m hurdles, junior Mac Maguire in the shot put, and freshman Colton Mitchell in the pole vault were all considered upsets, and gained the Leopards valuable points.

The women's team, although making a hard charge toward the end of the dual meet, finished second to Lehigh with a tally of 97-84.

Junior Elise Buffinton once again topped her own school record in the pole vault, jumping 12' 5 ½". Her previous record of 12' 3 ½" was set just last Saturday at the Gulden Invitational at Bucknell University.

Freshman Devin Smith continued the strong start to her Lafayette career and won the 200m in a time of 25.63. Smith Later competed in the 400m and won in 57.54. Both times are new personal bests for the Andover, N.J. native.

Two other event victories came from sophomore Brittany Powell. She won the long jump with a leap of 18' ¼" and the triple jump with a personal best of 38' 4 ¼".

Freshman Stephanie Benko and junior Rachel Pena also recorded new personal records. Benko won the 3,000m in a time of 10:16.21 while Pena won the shot put with a throw of 43' 7".

Members of the Lafayette track & field team will travel to the New Balance Invitational at the NYC Armory on Friday and Saturday. Others will compete at the Covert Classic at Lehigh University.
