Washington, D.C. - An early goal from Haley Keenan had the top-seeded American Eagles on the ropes in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament on Friday. Lafayette held the advantage in shots, 11-5, shots on goal, 5-3, and penalty corners, 5-3, but American was able to come away with a 2-1 overtime victory and deny the Leopards their third straight League title.
The Leopards jumped to an early lead as Keenan carried the ball into the circle and fired a shot past American's Ashley Dalisera and into the right corner of the Eagles cage in the 11th minute. Lafayette continued to pressure for the next ten minutes, but Dalisera and the American defense were able to keep the Leopards out.
American got its first chance of the afternoon in the 24th minute with a penalty corner. Jessica Deutsch came up with the initial save, but American's Alex McMackin was there to poke the rebound into the net and tie the score at a goal apiece.
The Maroon and White had the final chance of the first half when Kelsey Mead sent a penalty corner to Jenna Seybert, but Seybert's shot was blocked by the Eagle's defense. The Leopards outshot American 6-2 and held a 2-1 advantage in penalty corners in the first half.
Lafayette came out flying in the second half as Mead and Keenan both had early chances, but the game remained deadlocked at one. The Leopards earned a penalty corner in the 58th minute, but a shot from Brittany Blass was turned away by Dalisera. With four minutes to play in regulation, the Leopards final chance came off of the stick of Mead, whose shot was blocked by the Eagles, sending the game to an extra period.
American earned back-to-back penalty corners, as Grace Wilson cashed in on the second corner, firing a shot into the right side of the cage to send the Eagles to the Patriot League Final.
Keenan led the Leopards with a goal and two shots on target, while Blass and Seybert each fired three shots. Deutsch made one save in the loss, while Dalisera made four saves in the win.
Lafayette closes its season with a 6-12 record.
