STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Putting together his third four-goal game of the early season, sophomore Sonny Round led the Lafayette men's lacrosse team to its second win of the season on Tuesday afternoon in Staten Island, N.Y., defeating Wagner, 13-9. Round, coming into the game leading the Patriot League in goals per game, has now tallied 15 in four contests this season.

Classmate Brian Bock helped out with four assists on the day, while Round chipped in with three of his own. Freshman Kevin Wanke tallied the first hat trick of his career, coupling his three goals with an assist. Senior co-captain Anthony Zawadzki and freshman Morgan Westby also netted a goal apiece to round out the scoring.

Zawadzki took over the faceoff duties for the day, winning 15 of his 23 attempts, and the Leopards won the ground ball battle, 28-23. Wagner outshot Lafayette 39-37 on the game, but junior goalkeeper Jake Hyatt came up strong, making 16 saves, allowing just nine shots to slip through to his net.

Lafayette dominated the first quarter, scoring six goals to Wagner's two. Wagner opened the scoring at the 12:53 mark as Griffen Leclaire hit the back of the net to put the Seahawks up, 1-0. Just 51 seconds later, the Leopards began their roll, scoring seven of the next eight, with the last coming at the beginning of the second stanza.

Goals by Wanke, Zawadzki and Round gave the Leopards the 3-1 lead with 8:54 left in the first before Wagner's Brian Faughnan stopped the run. Round answered, along with scores from Scheuerle, Wanke and Bock to put the Maroon and White up, 7-2, at the 11:52 mark of the second quarter.

Wagner would outscore the Leopards from that point on, but not enough to make the comeback a reality. A Seahawks' goal at the 9:47 mark of the second was answered by three more from Lafayette's Wanke, Bock and Scheuerle to take a 10-3 lead into the halftime break.

After about 10 minutes of back-and-forth lacrosse coming out in the third period, Wagner put two tallies on the board as Colin O'Rourke and Cory Santor brought the Seahwaks within five, 10-5, with 1:54 to play in the third. Lafayette's Westby notched a tally to stop a would-be Wagner run at the end of the third period to put the Leopards comfortably in front, 11-5, going into the fourth.

After the third Round tally opened the fourth quarter, Wagner tried to make its move, scoring four of the next five to get itself within four, 13-9, with 5:20 remaining. However, Lafayette's defense stood strong and did not allow another score to seal its second victory of the season.
