DAVIDSON, N.C. - Despite playing Davidson to an 8-8 tie going into the halftime break, the Lafayette women's lacrosse team did not have enough to overcome the Wildcats in the second half as the Leopards fell, 17-13, on Tuesday evening in Davidson, N.C.
Junior midfielder Ana White led the Leopards in scoring with four goals to go along with three ground balls and nine draw controls. Freshman Carlianne McCabe, senior Addie Godfrey and junior Laura Kleiber each added two scores, while seniors Jessica Rothstein, Cammie Linville and Katie Leto also netted a goal apiece.
For Davidson, Ann Fucigna notched five scores, while Alanna Parker scored four goals and Erin Doherty added three. Lafayette held the edge in shots (25-24) and ground balls (19-13), while Davidson won 18 of the 33 draw controls.
The first half was a story of runs as a five-goal spurt from Davidson after Rothstein opened the game with a goal for Lafayette put the Wildcats up, 5-1, with 14:15 to play in the first.
At the 12:50 mark, McCabe took a feed from Godfrey and slotted it in the back of the net to end the run and shift momentum in Lafayette's favor. That goal started a five-goal string for the Leopards as they took the lead, 6-5, with 2:53 remaining in the half.
Two scores from the Leopards and three from the Wildcats ended the opening stanza with the score knotted up at 8-8.
Davidson came out of the locker room focused as the Wildcats netted the first two scores of the half to take a 10-8 lead, one they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Two goals from Lafayette followed as Leto and Linville notched tallies to tie the game up again at 10 apiece. Then, Fucigna took over for the Wildcats as she scored her first and second of four second-half goals to put Davidson up, 13-10, with 18:20 remaining.
The Leopards weren't able to come back from that three-goal hole as they couldn't string multiple goals together and the horn sounded with a final score of 17-13.
Next up for Lafayette is a meeting with archrival Lehigh on Friday evening at Rappolt Field at 7 p.m.
