Easton, Pa. - William & Mary scored 27 first-half points en route to a 34-6 victory over Lafayette on Saturday night at Fisher Stadium.
The Tribe began their first offensive snap from their one yard line after a 39-yard punt downed at the one. Quarterback Michael Graham scrambled for 55 yards after it appeared that the Leopards had stopped him for no gain. It was a play that was a sign of things to come. The Tribe closed out that offensive series with a one-yard touchdown run by tailback Mikal Abdul-Saboor to give the Tribe an early 6-0 lead. The PAT was no good.
Lafayette (0-2) fell behind 27-0 in the first half in large part due to several offensive miscues. The Tribe defenders intercepted quarterback Zach Zweizig twice in the half and returned both of them for touchdowns. Tribe linebacker, Marcus Harvey, intercepted a shovel pass from Zweizig and returned it 29 yards for the score. Later in the half, Zweizig threw a pass intended for fullback Pat Creahan only to have it picked off by Tribe defender, Airek Green, who returned it 25 yards for the William & Mary 20-0 lead.
William & Mary (2-1) added a touchdown several minutes later on a two-yard run by Graham to give the Tribe a 27-0 edge. The touchdown was set up by a long 52-yard completion from Graham to receiver Sean Ballard. Graham finished 9-17 for 146 yards passing and 69 yards rushing on six carries.
Lafayette did end the first half on a positive note, driving 50 yards in 33 seconds to put points on the board with a 38-yard field goal from Ryan Gralish with four seconds left on the clock. Lafayette trailed 27-3 at intermission.
The second half started with more of the same for the Leopards. After the Maroon & White defense forced a fumble on William & Mary's first offensive series, the Leopards' offensive drive was cut short by a Ross Scheuerman fumble on the Tribe's 16-yard line.
Lafayette added a field goal in the third quarter to trim William & Mary's lead to 27-6.
Abdul-Saboor added a late score for the Tribe on a 13-yard run to give in the 34-6 final. Abdul-Saboor finished the day with 103 yards rushing on 14 carries and two touchdowns.
Zweizig was 28-42 for 225 yards in the air in the losing effort. Receiver Mark Ross' saw his streak of four consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards snapped as he finished with five catches for 68 yards.
Lafayette hits the road for the first time on Sept. 21 to face Penn, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
