LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette men's soccer team dropped a vital contest at Bucknell on Wednesday evening as the Bison tallied a late insurance goal to put the game away with a final score of 2-0.
The first chance of the game came off the feet of the Maroon and White in the seventh minute. The Leopards worked a corner and instead of sending a service into the box, elected a short pass to a streaking Nate Arronson toward the left corner of the 18-yard box. Arronson sent a low shot through traffic that had to be stopped by a diving save from Bucknell goalkeeper Clarke Fox to keep Lafayette off the board.
The Bison lit up the board just before halftime in the 36th minute. Bucknell's Mark Liebensperger settled a feed from Jack Zollicoffer about 25 yards out and sent an unlikely shot on goal that deflected off Julian Plummer in the Lafayette defensive end. The ricochet fooled freshman goalkeeper Brad Seeber and trickled over the line to his left to give the home team the 1-0 advantage entering the break.
In the second half, play was up and down the field, but neither team was able to take hold of the game from an offensive standpoint. Finally, in the 83rd minute, a Bucknell insurance tally put it away.
A long pass down the left side of the pitch from Chris Thorsheim connected with the run of Jesse Klug into the left side of the box in front of goal. Klug one-timed the ball and beat Seeber across the goal and into the far-side, taking a 2-0 edge, a scoreline that would stand to the final buzzer.
Seeber tallied four saves in the game for his second loss of the year to move his record to 1-2-0 this season. On the other side, Fox picked up three saves in the clean sheet.
Bucknell edged the Leopards in shots, 15-9, and corners were tied at five apiece. The Bison tabbed 10 fouls to Lafayette's eight.
Next up for the Leopards is a trip to West Point, N.Y. on Saturday for a matchup with Army at 6:30 p.m.
