LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Lafayette swimming and diving teams got into the meat of their Patriot League schedules on Saturday, competing against American, Navy and host Bucknell at Kinney Natatorium.
In the men's team competition, Lafayette registered a 60-point win over American, after edging the Eagles by a single point last season. Bucknell (229-71) and Navy (218-77) claimed meet victories.
The Leopards were buoyed by the performance of the 200 free relay. Xavier Laracuente, Christopher Wickwire, Evan Newbold and Robert Lowery swam a time of 1:17 to touch the wall first.
Lafayette head coach Jim Dailey used a similar lineup in the 200IM relay as Newbold, Greg Grewal, Wickwire and Lowery took third place in 1:35.68.
Individually, Grewal took home third place in the 100-yard breaststroke, swimming to the wall in 58.13. He also took sixth place in the 200 breast (2:11.95). Lowery placed fifth in the 100 free in 47.89.
Lafayette enjoyed a measure of success in the butterfly events. Freshman Sam Haines ended fifth in the 200 butterfly (1:58.34) while Wickwire finished sixth in the 100-yard event in 52.59. Freshman Nick Whiteman stood out in the 1000 and 500-yard freestyle events.
In the diving events, Ivan Basurto secured a fifth-place finish in the three-meter with a score of 240.85. He won both boards in the meet against American. Both Basurto and Cory Heffelfinger improved their all-time top 10 standings with Ivan fourth in the one meter and third in the three meter while Heffelfinger rests sixth in both events.
For the Lafayette women, Jaclyn Andrews collected a pair of fifth-place finishes in the100 and 200 butterfly, finishing in 58.71 and 2:09.51, respectively, which were both season-best times. Senior Jane Kuntz swam in season best times in the 100 and 200 breast events and matched her Patriot League Championship time from last year in the 400 IM. She made Lafayette's all-time Top 10 as 10th in the 100 breast.
The last women's event of the day, the 200 free relay, saw the Leopards claim a third-place finish. Megan Kaveney, Allie Berger, Isabella Walko and Sydney Wight combined to swim at 1:40.56.
Bucknell (248-50), American (181-116) and Navy (245-53) notched meet wins over the Leopards.
"It was a great meet. What a difference two weeks can make," Dailey said. "Both teams swam really well.
Lafayette's next meet comes against archrival Lehigh on Nov. 21 at Lehman College in Bronx, N.Y.
