BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Right-handed pitcher Mitch Leeds did not surrender an earned run as Lafayette held off Lehigh's late rally to win 2-1 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader.
After scoring twice in the top of the third inning, Lafayette (12-25, 5-12 Patriot) held the 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Leeds got the first out with a groundout to second base, but Lehigh's Patrick Donnelly reached safely on an error. Two batters later the Mountain Hawks (22-20, 9-9 Patriot) had runners on first and third with Tim McKay at the plate. Leeds struck out McKay looking for the second out of the inning, but Justin Pacchioli delivered a single that pulled Lehigh within one run.
At that point, Lafayette opted to go to the bullpen and brought Connor McMahon into the game to face Mike Garzillo with two on and two away. The Leopards' right-handed closer did his job by inducing a ground ball to second base for the final out and his third save of the year.
Left fielder Brett Thompson led off the top of the third inning with a single back up the middle off Lehigh starter Kevin Long, who took the loss after allowing four hits, walking one and striking out four in seven innings of work. A single by Matt Lawrence followed and Lafayette had runners on second and third with nobody out after a wild pitch. Nick Murray's sacrifice fly put the Leopards on the board when Thompson tagged up and crossed the plate, prior to another wild pitch that sent Lawrence to third. A ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Andrew Santomauro scored Lawrence, but also was ruled an error on the shortstop as Santomauro went to first base. Santomauro's RBI doubled the lead as Lafayette went up 2-0.
Lehigh's best chance to score against Leeds prior to the seventh inning came in the third when McKay singled and Pacchioli walked with one down. Garzillo ripped a single into left field that McKay tried to score on, but Thompson gunned him down with a strike to the plate for the second out of the inning. The next batter was Joe Abeln, who flied out to centerfield to end the inning.
Leeds struck out the side in the fourth and finished his effort with seven strikeouts, which set a new career-high for the sophomore. He scattered six hits and walked three in his first victory of the season.
