WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lafayette men's swimming and diving team emerged victorious with a 152-136 decision over Colgate on Saturday as part of a three-way meet with Army.
"It came down to the last two events. We needed to take first and third in the IM and take seocnd in the relay," said Lafayette head coach Jim Dailey. "Instead, Rob Pollastro, Greg Grewal and Ben Zajic went 1-2-3 and the relay finished second to beat Colgate. Two swims stick out that got us to that point were Ryan Moore's fifth-place finish in the 200 breast and Evan Newbold's win the 200 back."
Newbold won the 200 backbackstroke in 1:54.07 while taking fourth in the 100 back (53.48) and the 200 individual medley (1:37.30).
Junior Greg Grewal performed well in the breaststroke, placing second in the 100 (58.42) and fifth in the 200 (2:14.46).
In the freestyle events, classmate Robert Lowery was fifth in the 50 (22.05) and 200 (1:45.90). In the distance freestyle, freshman Nick Whiteman claimed a third-place finish in the 500 (5:01.61), two spots ahead of sophomore teammate David Perlow (5:04.49).
The Leopards placed 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly with Christopher Wickwire (52.09) finishing ahead of Josh Sembrano (52.10) and Sam Haines (52.38). Junior Rob Pollastro took third place in the 200 IM (2:01.29).
For the Lafayette women, freshman Sydney Wight won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.35 and took fifth in the 100 freestyle (54.95). Freshman Noelle Buckley notched a fourth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.84).
Junior Caroline Kearney secured a third-place finish in the 200 butterfly, clocking a time of 2:18.31 while senior Jane Kuntz finished third in the 200 IM (2:14.97). Senior Megan Kaveney was fifth in the 50 free (24.89).
In the 200 free relay, the Lafayette women and men's teams each placed second.
In the diving events, senior Ivan Basurto was third in the 3-meter (196.10) and fourth in the 1-meter (202.40) while senior Robyn Henderek was fifth and sixth respectively.
In the overall team scoring, the Lafayette men topped Colgate 152-136, but lost to Army 193-97 while Army also beat Colgate 195-95. For the women, Colgate out-swam Lafayette 210-86 and Army beat Lafayette (194-89) and Colgate (161-127).
"We swam well even though we are really tired. We have been swimming doubles since Jan. 2 and just returned from our winter training trip Jan. 13," Dailey explained. "We have one more week of doubles before school starts Jan 26. Then, we are virtually at taper time."
The Leopards return to action on Jan. 31 at the Bucknell Invitational, a two session unscored meet.
