WASHINGTON - A trio of first half goals from American Saturday afternoon was too much for Lafayette to overcome, with the Leopards ultimately falling 5-2 in their final road game of the regular season.
The Eagles (9-4, 4-1 PL) had a 10-0 advantage in shots in the opening 35 minutes, and they picked up goals in the ninth, 17th and 31st minutes. Rosie Shanks and Hannah Millen registered goals for Lafayette (7-7, 2-2 PL) in a much more competitive second half, but the damage had already been done.
Shanks' marker, her second in as many games, came just 1:11 after the intermission. Ami Turner registered an assist on the play, giving her five on the year and moving her into second place on the team with 13 points for the season.
American, though, answered right back with a goal from Sophia Crawshay in the 43rd minute, and Isabel Terwindt made it 5-1 just 3:01 after with her second strike of the contest.
Millen's fourth goal of the season came on the Leopards' first successful penalty stroke of the season at 68:05. Lafayette had nearly added a second goal two minutes prior, but an effort from Amanda Magadan rattled off the post.
Shots were 9-8 in favor of the Eagles in the second half, and American earned nine of the game's 11 penalty corners. Katelyn Arnold made seven stops in goal, one higher than her six-save total in last weekend's win over Bucknell.
With today's setback, the Leopards fall to fourth place in the Patriot League standings, one game back of the Bison. Lafayette, however, can clinch a playoff spot with a win in next Saturday's home matchup against Holy Cross (6-9, 1-3 PL). That tilt is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. from Rappolt Field.
