BOSTON - Early goals from Amanda Magadan and Kendall Weedling got Lafayette off to an outstanding start in Friday's Patriot League semifinal, but a go-ahead penalty stroke midway through the second half helped complete a comeback for second-seeded American in an eventual 4-2 victory.

The Eagles (12-6) advance to tomorrow's championship game against top-seeded host Boston University, while the Leopards end their season with a record of 9-10.

Magadan had the first three shots of the game for Lafayette, and the last of those found the back of the cage 12:03 into the first half. Rushing down the right side, her initial effort was stopped by American goalie Kate McBeath, but a follow-up opportunity beat the Patriot League's First-Team goalkeeper to the left side. The goal was Magadan's 10th of the season, making her the first Leopard to crack double figures since 2012.

The Eagles had a pair of chances to equalize in the 20th minute, but Katelyn Arnold made a pair of stops, the last of which came on a diving effort to her left, to keep them off the scoreboard.

Magadan also contributed to the Maroon and White's second goal, which came less than a minute after Arnold's saves. She led Weedling in on a breakaway down the right side, and the senior forward snuck a shot past McBeath into the lower-left corner of the cage.

Patriot League Rookie of the Year Rafaela Rubas responded for American in the 24th minute, beating Arnold on a hard low shot from the top of the circle.

After that strike, the Eagles managed five of the half's final seven shots, and they leveled up the score off a penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock. Rubas again did the damage, putting in her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Both teams had three shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, but the defenses were up to the challenge. American, though, broke the deadlock in the 51st minute. A diving defensive save by Cody Hunsicker prevented a goal from Sophia Crawshay, but that set up a penalty stroke for Eagle forward Natalie Konerth. She directed a perfectly-placed low shot past Arnold to put Lafayette behind for the first time in the game.

The Leopards earned five penalty corners over the final 20 minutes in an attempt to find an equalizer, but two stops by McBeath, including a diving effort off a shot from Ami Turner in the 62nd minute, kept them off the scoreboard. American clinched the game with 1:44 left, as Leah DiGiandomenico deflected a pass from Rubas past Arnold from the right side of the circle.

The final shot totals were 17-14 in favor of the Eagles, while each team finished with 10 penalty corners. Arnold registered eight saves in goal for Lafayette, and Magadan had a game-high seven shots.

Note:

Boston U. advanced to the championship game earlier in the afternoon with a 3-2 victory in double overtime over fourth-seeded Bucknell.
