HAMILTON, N.Y. - Eric Joseph tallied four goals and Robert Orazietti added a hat trick for Lafayette, but No. 20 Colgate held off the Leopards second half comeback in a 12-10 setback on Saturday afternoon.

The Leopards moved to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Patriot League play, while the Raiders improved to 3-0 this season and 1-0 in conference action. Jason Sands handed out a game-high five assists for the Leopards. Matt Cortese made 18 saves in a losing effort for Lafayette.

Colgate jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first period. Sonny Round tallied for the Leopards at the 8:09 remaining in the quarter to trim the deficit to two. The Raiders scored the final four goals of the frame to take a 7-1 lead after the first quarter.

The teams' exchange goals in the second quarter, as Joseph fired home a pass from Sands with 3:13 to go in the half. Colgate maintained its six-goal lead, 8-2, into the halftime break.

Kevin Lewis opened the scoring in the third quarter, scoring on a pass from Joseph with 8:22 on the clock. Less than a minute later, Sands found Brian Bock for another Lafayette goal, pulling the Leopards to within four, 8-4.

Colgate answered with a tally off the ensuing faceoff, but Lafayette's Orazietti countered with 6:30 to play in the quarter. Two in a row from the Raiders with four minutes left in the third period extended the deficit to 11-5.

Lafayette scored the next two to close out the frame, as Joseph tallied his second of the contest, followed by Orazietti's second marker as time expired to make it 11-7 going into the fourth.

Colgate's Ryan Walsh netted the first goal of the final period with 14:48 on the clock to open a five-goal margin for the Raiders. Three minutes later Orazietti completed his hat trick and the Leopards trailed 12-8.

At the 6:34 mark, Joseph fired home his third goal of the contest to pull Lafayette within three. Another marker from Joseph with 10 seconds to go cut the deficit to 12-10, but that was as close as the Leopards would get as Colgate held on for the win.
