BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton used five goals from Sophia Racciatti to outlast the Lafayette women's lacrosse team on Tuesday evening in Binghamton, N.Y., 10-7.
Sophomore Charlotte Rath was a bright spot for the Leopards, scoring two goals and leading the team with a pair of ground balls and caused turnovers, respectively. Classmate Amanda Case also tallied a pair of markers for the Maroon and White, while junior Melissa Galione and sophomores Kirsten Wilhelmsen and Maggie Carver each netted one goal each.
On the other side, Binghamton's Racciatti scored five to pace the Bearcat attack, while Tiffany Ryan added a pair offensively. Valerie DeNapoli was all over the field, leading the way in ground balls (4), draw controls (3) and caused turnovers (2).
Lafayette held the advantage in shots, 24-21, but converted on just one of its eight free-position attempts. Ground balls and draw controls went in Binghamton's favor by 14-12 and 10-9 margins. Freshman Anna Raymond made two saves on the afternoon, while the Bearcats' Erin McNulty stopped 10 Lafayette shots for her second win of the year.
The loss moves Lafayette to 1-5 on the year overall with the lone win coming against UC Davis on Feb. 22. The Bearcats' victory improves them to 2-1 on their young season.
After the first 22:54, the Bearcats had opened up a 4-2 advantage, thanks to three tallies from Racciatti. However, three back from the Leopards, including two from Case to open the second half brought the Leopards back even at 5-5 with 23:36 to play.
Then, Binghamton made its run, ripping off five straight over the next 11 minutes to open the game up at 9-5 with 8:19 remaining. Carver's marker at the 6:51 mark ended the run and made it a three-goal game, but the Bearcats ran out the final six minutes with both teams trading a pair of goals to make the final 10-7.
Lafayette returns to Fisher Field on Saturday to open Patriot League play, hosting Navy at 1 p.m.
