PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Amanda Magadan and Katie Birle each registered their sixth goals of the season Monday night at Drexel, but Lafayette did not have quite enough offense in the second half to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit, with the Dragons holding on late for a 3-2 victory.
The Leopards (5-5) outshot Drexel by an 8-3 margin in the second half, but an insurance goal by the Dragons with 15:40 left in the frame proved to be the difference. That tally gave the home team a 3-1 advantage, and Lafayette was unable to get off any additional shots after Birle reduced the lead back down to one with 4:35 remaining on the clock.
Drexel (2-6), which was playing its first contest in 10 days, controlled play for a majority of the first half, collecting 12 of the game's 16 shots and moving in front on a pair of goals from Megan Wiest in the 11th and 32nd minutes, respectively.
After both teams were held shotless through the first 11:06 of the second half, Lafayette took advantage of a Dragon yellow card to get on the scoreboard. Magadan took a pass from Ami Turner and directed a close-range effort past goalie Ainslie Rhoads during the man-up situation. Turner now ranks second on the team in assists after recording her third helper of the year on the play.
The only three shots for Drexel after the intermission came during a sequence following a penalty corner in the 55th minute. Katelyn Arnold stopped shots from Mary Lynam and Lauren Hibshman, but as the scramble in front continued, Katie Bagdon was able to sneak a shot past the junior goalkeeper.
The remainder of the game was all Leopards, with the visitors earning three penalty corners and firing seven shots towards Rhoads. The last of those found back of the cage, with Birle firing in a low laser from the top right of the circle. Both Magadan and Birle moved into a tie for the Patriot League-lead in goals scored this season with their tallies this evening, and Magadan is now tied for second in the conference with 15 points overall.
Neither team, however, managed a shot in the final four-plus minutes, allowing Drexel to earn its first home win of the season.
Magadan ended the night with a game-high five shots, four of which were directed on goal. The Dragons finished with slim advantages in both shots (15-12) and penalty corners (7-6).
Lafayette returns to the Patriot League schedule for its next game, an 11 a.m. contest this Saturday at rival Lehigh.
