BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. - Vincent Bezecourt sent a rocketed knuckle ball into the top left corner of the net in the 101st minute to send the Lafayette men's soccer team to its first loss of the season on Wednesday evening in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., 1-0 at the hands of Saint Francis Brooklyn.
In a game that featured just five shots on goal combined, the Terriers finally came through late to light up the board and steal one from the Maroon and White. The Leopards became the fourth team in as many games to fail to score against a stout St. Francis defense.
Lafayette was not without chances in the game, though, as the Leopards came close to breaking through on three separate occasions.
In the 16th minute, sophomore Christian Moyse sent a long throw into the box that was juggled around and eventually found the foot of junior co-captain Ryan Egan at the top of the box on the right side. Egan sent a bouncer through traffic that forced a diving save from the Terriers' Jack Binks to his right side to keep it out.
That was the lone chance in the opening 45 minutes before senior Greg Biggiani looked to make a play in the 65th minute. Surprising the St. Francis defense by continuing to run under a long clear from the back line, he stepped in front of a defender and found himself 1v1 with Binks. Biggiani tried to chip it over the oncoming keeper, but Binks was able to get his arms up in time to stop the scoring chance.
The final Lafayette effort came late in regulation. In the 86th minute, Egan sent a low corner to the top of the box, finding an open freshman Grant Burg. Burg ripped an open look just over the crossbar as the game moved into extra time where it was decided by Bezecourt 59 seconds into the second extra session.
Seeber made one save in his first defeat of his sophomore campaign, while Binks was excellent, picking up his third win with three saves on the night. St. Francis led the way in corners, 7-5, and fouls were 10-9 against the Terriers.
The Leopards return home on Saturday, hosting Fordham at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium with a kickoff time of 1 p.m.
