BOSTON, Mass - A cold shooting day led to a 68-47 loss to Boston U. on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards were 16-of-56 from the floor (29 percent) at Case Gym, including a 14 percent clip in the first half when the Terriers raced out to a 26-11 lead at halftime.
Monty Boykins led Lafayette with 10 points, the only Lafayette player in double figures. Zach Rufer chipped in with nine and Matt Klinewski added seven. Freshman Paulius Zalys continued his solid play, adding six points and six rebounds with a couple of assists in 22 minutes. Nick Lindner scored five to points to inch closer to the 1000-career-point plateau, bringing his total 979.
BU (8-9, 1-3) led by as many as 17 in the opening stanza. Eric Fanning, who finished the day with a game-high 22 points, had 12 in the first half, and his bucket with 4:47 before intermission put Boston U. ahead 22-5. The Leopards answered with six straight points by Boykins. His three-pointer with 2:22 left cut the deficit to 22-11 before Fanning added two more layups for BU's 15-point halftime margin.
Lafayette (4-11, 1-3) could never really cut into the hosts' lead in the second half, as the Terriers outscored Lafayette 17-11 over the first six minutes to lead 43-22 at 13:51. BU extended its advantage to as many as 27 with six minutes left when Nathan Dieudonne finished off-a three-point play with a free throw. Dieudonne had 11 points and 11 boards on the afternoon when front court mate Nick Havenener also pulled down 11 boards. Kyle Foreman added 15 points and seven rebounds as one of four players in double figures for BU which outrebounded Lafayette 55-31.
The Leopards continue Patriot League play on Wednesday, hosting Holy Cross (7-8, 2-2) at 7 p.m.
Notes: Lafayette played without Bryce Scott who sat out a second straight game with a shoulder injury.
Lindner needs 21 points to become the 42nd player in Lafayette history to reach the 1000-point plateau.
