WEST POINT, N.Y. - Another strong outing from David Bednar and a clutch pinch-hit homer from Alex Woinski led Lafayette to a doubleheader sweep over Army West Point to begin the Patriot League schedule on Saturday.
Bednar struck out 10 in a seven-inning complete game shutout in Game 1, as the Leopards claimed a 4-0 victory, while Woinski broke a 2-2 tie with his three-run shot in the sixth inning of Game 2 to help the visitors emerge with a 6-3 triumph.
Lafayette (8-14, 2-0 PL) starts the conference season with two victories for the first time since its championship-winning season in 2007. The two teams will face off for two more games in West Point tomorrow afternoon, with Game 1 scheduled for 1 p.m.
GAME 1
Bednar needed only 85 pitches to complete his seven-inning shutout in the opener, racking up double-digit strikeouts for a second-consecutive contest. Michael Coniglio and Dan Leckie, meanwhile, paced the offense with two hits apiece.
A pair of hit batters helped the Leopards get on the scoreboard on the second. AJ Kloehn and Tyler Hudson were both plunked by Army starter Matt Ball, and Andrew Landolfi drove Kloehn in with a one-out single to right field.
Bednar racked up a pair of strikeouts in the second through fourth innings, and Lafayette added some insurance runs for the junior right-hander in the top half of the fifth. Coniglio led off the frame with his second single of the contest, and Leckie belted his first home run of the season to make it 3-0 in favor of the Maroon and White.
Hudson reached on a throwing error in the sixth, and he crossed the plate on another throwing error to increase the Leopard lead to 4-0, but with the way Bednar was pitching the extra run proved insignificant. The Lafayette ace escaped a leadoff walk in the sixth by inducing a 5-4-3 from No. 3 hitter John McCarthy, and he gave up only a two-out single in the seventh to seal his third victory of the 2016 season.
Bednar lowered his season ERA to 2.88, and his ERA is a miniscule 1.53 over his last five appearances spanning 29 1/3 innings. He has 40 strikeouts compared to nine walks over 34 1/3 innings on the year.
Coniglio's multi-hit game was his 11th of the season, and he also swiped his 12th bag in 12 attempts overall.
GAME 2
Starter Mitch Leeds found himself in a jam in the opening inning of the nightcap, but he was able to escape with only one run allowed. The first two Black Knight hitters reached on singles, though leadoff man Kris Lindner was thrown out by Kloehn attempting to steal third. The next two batters reached on walks to load the bases with one out. After getting the second out at the plate on a fielder's choice, Army pushed across its first run on a hit by pitch. Leeds then left the bases loaded with a strikeout of Justin Reece.
The Black Knights added a second run on an RBI single by Jacob Page in the fourth inning, but Lafayette's offense began to get going in the top half of the fifth.
Landolfi got things started with a one-out single, and Jackson Kramer brought him home on a double to left-center on an 0-2 count with two outs. Steven Cohen tied up the score two pitches later, coming through with a single through the left side.
Leeds worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning, and the Leopards picked up where they left off in the sixth. After singles from Campbell Lipe and Drew Aherne, Woinski drove his first long ball of the season and sixth of his collegiate career over the wall in left-center to make it 5-2.
Lafayette was not done in the inning, as Coniglio stole second after reaching on an infield single and made it home on a single by Kramer.
Leeds again retired the side in order in the bottom half, ending his day with five Ks and six hits allowed over six innings of work. He improved to 1-1 on the year with today's victory.
Army (9-16, 0-2 PL) threatened to rally in the eighth. David Giusti had pitched a scoreless seventh-inning for the Leopards, but he gave way to Ryan Callanan in the next frame after the home side loaded the bases with only one out.
Callanan snuffed out the threat, inducing a strikeout out of Trey Martin and a fly out to left by Page to keep the score at 6-2. The Black Knights got one run back in the final inning, but Callanan was able to shut the door to pick up his second-collegiate save.
Kramer had a 3-for-4 performance from the plate in Game 2, registering his second three-hit contest of the season.
Note:
With today's victories, Lafayette improved to 4-1 this season when holding its opponents to fewer than four runs.
