CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - A pair of Lafayette baseball players were rewarded with All-Patriot League recognition on Tuesday morning, with senior outfielder Michael Coniglio selected to the first team while sophomore shortstop Steven Cohen landed on the second team for a second-consecutive season.
Voting for the All-League teams was made by the six Patriot League head coaches, who could not select their own student-athletes. The league office also released the 2016 major award winners, with regular-season champions Navy claiming three of the four top individual accolades.
Coniglio broke through in a big way during his senior season, appearing in all 43 games and starting 42 of those contests from the leadoff position. The Ridgewood, N.J., native reached base in 37 games and had 19 multiple-hit outings. A .335 hitter with 25 stolen bases overall, he was just as consistent during conference play, managing a .333 batting average with 11 swipes during 20 league games.
At the end of Lafayette's season, Coniglio was tied for 12th in the nation in steals while ranking second in the Patriot League in average, tied for third in hits and fourth in runs scored. This is his first All-League selection during his time on College Hill.
Cohen earned a repeat spot on the second team after once again coming up big for the Leopards at the plate. He finished the spring with a .327 average, leading the Maroon and White with 32 RBIs and a .421 on-base percentage while ranking tied for first with 14 doubles. The Newtown Square, Pa., native had hits in 19 of Lafayette's first 20 games, including 12-straight from March 8-29. He also added nine steals on the basepaths.
