Men's Lacrosse Drops Opener at Michigan

Feb. 11, 2017

Box Score

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team opened up its 2017 campaign with a 17-6 loss to Michigan on Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Despite an evenly-played game for the most part in the statistical categories, Michigan put the ball in the back of the net early and often, up 6-1 after the first quarter and 11-4 at halftime. The Wolverines scored all three in the third quarter and three of the five goals in the fourth to walk out with the 17-6 win.

Scott McAvoy was the lone multi-goal scorer for the Maroon and White, with both of his goals coming in the first half. McAvoy also led the Leopards in shots on goal with five, followed by three each from Eric Joseph, Kevin Lewis and Jason Sands. Joseph, Sands, Alex Mezey and Conor Walters were the other Lafayette goal-scorers with one apiece.

The bright spot was between the pipes, though, as sophomore Jonathan Anastos stood tall early, making three saves in the first two minutes of action. Despite giving up 17 markers, Anastos made 16 saves on the night to keep the Leopards in it as long as he could.

Michigan finished with a slight edge in shots, 43-42, and a distinct advantage in ground balls, winning 39 compared to Lafayette's 24. The Wolverines took 15 of the game's 26 faceoffs and converted on both of their extra-man opportunities.

Ian King was the game's leading scorer, beating Anastos five times on the afternoon on eight shots on goal. Rocco Sutherland and Pat Tracy added hat tricks of their own, each helping out on another for four points, respectively.

The Leopards return to the east coast, but remain on the road for their next contest, traveling to Staten Island, N.Y. to battle with Wagner on Friday. Opening faceoff is slated for 4 p.m.
