PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Penn took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon, winning 9-1 and 8-1 at Penn Park.
In the first game, Penn scored six runs in the first two innings while holding Lafayette to one score. Samantha Sweigart led off the game with a single, stole second and later scored on Allison Goldwait's RBI-single. That was the end of the offense for the Leopards who stranded eight runners in the game.
Penn answered with three runs in the home half of the first. Lafayette starter Stacy Gordon hit one batter and walked four more as the Quakers scored all three of their runs on bases-loaded walks.
In the second inning, Penn used the long ball stretch the lead. Leah Allen and Jurie Joyner (2-RBI HR) pushed the margin to 6-1 before Lafayette made the call to the bullpen for Kristyn Marinelli. Penn added two more runs in the fifth on Sarah Cwiertenia's two-out two-run single.
Gordon (1-2) took the loss, surrendering six runs on four hits while Alexis Sargent struck out six in the circle victory.
In the nightcap, Penn scored at least one run in every inning but the fifth in a 9-1 final. In the opening inning, Cwiertnia and Joyner each plated runs. The Quakers led 5-1 after three innings, as Lainey Dorris' single drove in a baserunner, and 8-1 after four inning when Joyner (2-for-4) doubled in a pair.
The Leopards, who committed three errors in the game, scored their lone run in the top of fourth. Jenna Orlando, Miranda Skurla and Stephanie Thomas all singled, and it was Thomas' hit that put the Leopards on the scoreboard.
Thomas was hit with the loss, giving up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits over three innings. Penn starter Jennifer Brann struck out six batters in the victory.
The Leopards (1-7) are set to begin Patriot League play on Saturday in a three-game series at Bucknell.
