BALTIMORE, Md. -- Lafayette survived a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning to close out its first victory of the season, a 3-2 win over Morgan State on Saturday morning in the UMBC First Pitch Classic.
The Leopards spotted Morgan State (6-8) a run in the top of the first on Danielle Pitpit's RBI-single. Lafayette evened things in the bottom of the fourth. Malori Pojar reached on an error to get the inning going. Brooke Wensel and Addison Goldwait, followed with a double and single, respectively, to knot the game at 1-1.
The Maroon and White (1-2) took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the next frame. Morgan Biddle's lead-off walk and Jenna Orlando's sac bunt put Biddle in scoring position. Samantha Sweigart delivered the go-ahead run with a single to right. Wensel followed with her own single to left and Sweigart scored on the play. Lafayette led 3-1.
Kristyn Marinelli came on in relief of Leopard starter Stacy Gordon in the bottom of the sixth. Marinelli faced a bases-loaded situation and struck out pinch hitter Sarah Clark to end the inning and preserve the 3-1 lead.
In the seventh, Marinelli walked two batters and hit another to load the bases with one out. Audrianna Alvarez flew out to right to score a run on a sac fly, but the Leopard defense ended the game. Orlando hit Miranda Skurla with the cut-off throw and she relayed it Wensel at shortstop to cut down the runner for the final out. Gordon (1-0) allowed one run on five hits in 5.2 innings for the circle victory while Marinelli collected the first save of her career. Amy Begg was hit with the loss, allowing three runs on four hits over five innings.
Lafayette will finish off its first weekend, playing UMBC at 12:45 p.m.
