RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- Lafayette could not get the bats going against Manhattan in Wednesday's softball doubleheader, as the Leopards were limited to a combined nine hits in two games resulting in 4-0 and 6-4 finals.
In the first game, Lafayette ran into Manhattan's Briana Matazinsky who proved to be nearly unhittable in the circle as she won her 13th game of the season. Matazinsky faced just 23 Leopard batters in the seven-inning game and surrendered one hit, to Samantha Sweigart in the first inning.
Lafayette managed one other baserunner in the game when Kristyn Marinelli reached on a lead-off walk to start the fifth inning.
The Jaspers (24-12) led from the outset, plating a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the first. They added another in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth on a Kat Prevo solo home run and an Alexa Dawid ground-rule double to push the final to 4-0.
Stacy Gordon (2-8) was charged with the loss, giving up two runs on three hits over 4.1 innings. She struck out two and walked three in her eighth start of the season.
In game two, Lafayette's seventh-inning rally fell just short in the 6-4 final.
The Leopards spotted Manhattan four runs in the first inning. Lafayette committed two errors in the first three batters and then a sac fly and three RBI-singles ran the score to 4-0.
Jenn Vasquez drove in the Jaspers' final two runs on a single up the middle in the second and a double to left field in the fourth inning as Manhattan led 6-0.
Lafayette made it interesting in the seventh inning. After a lead-off ground out, Lafayette rattled off four straight singles. The third, by Sweigart, plated Lafayette's first run of the game and prompted a pitching change.
The next batter, pinch hitter Marinelli, singled home two more runs. Lafayette cut the lead to 6-3.
Manhattan went back to its starting pitcher, Nicole Williams, to get the last two outs of the game. She promptly struck out Randall before walking pinch hitter Addison Goldwait to trim the deficit to 6-4. Williams (6-5) ended the suspense by striking out Jenna Orlando for the final out of the game and her seventh via strikeout.
Randall (0-3) took the loss, allowing six runs (just two earned) on eight hits with a pair of walks.
Lafayette (6-21) will jump back into Patriot League play this weekend, hosting Boston U. in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch each day is slated for noon. The Leopards will honor their four seniors prior to Sunday's game as part of Senior Day.
