LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- Lafayette softball extended its winning streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of Rider on Sunday afternoon. The Leopards managed 2-1 and 4-3 victories behind Maddie Wensel's three RBIs and pitching victories by Stacy Gordon and Stephanie Thomas.
In the opener, the teams traded runs in the first inning. Samantha Sweigart (3-for-4) led off the game with a double and Mallory Kane's sac bunt put Sweigart at third base. Maddie Wensel gave the Leopards the 1-0 lead with her RBI-single before a double play ended the inning.
Rider answered with one run on three hits despite Brooke Wensel cutting down a potential run at the plate.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Leopards took the lead for good in the third inning. Kristyn Marinelli uncorked a two-out single up the middle to score Kane who had reached on a lead-off walk. Lafayette led 2-1.
Gordon, who was 2-for-3 at the plate, continued her solid work in his circle, allowing just four hits over the final four innings and only six for the game. She fanned three and walked one in the win. Emily Oltman (4-12) took the loss, surrendering two runs on eight hits with three walks and a strikeout.
In game two, Maddie Wensel's two-out single in the sixth handed Lafayette the 4-3 victory and the doubleheader sweep.
The Leopards picked up a run on a throwing error in the first inning and two more in the third. Maddie Wensel led off the third frame with a solo home run and Alexis Randall, the starting pitcher in game two, singled home another as Lafayette led 3-2.
The Broncs (6-39) tied the game at three apiece in the fifth inning on Amanda Jordan's double which prompted a move to the bullpen to replace Randall (4.2 IP, 5 H, 3K, 3 BB) with Stephanie Thomas.
The game did not stay tied for long. Addison Goldwait led off the visitor sixth with a base knock followed by Jenna Orlando's sacrifice. Sweigart's infield single put runners on the corners with one out. A foul out was the second out of the inning, but Maddie Wensel came through with a run-scoring single through the left side for the 4-3 advantage.
Thomas allowed two hits in the sixth but managed to keep the Broncs scoreless. Then she retired them in order in the seventh for the victory. Thomas threw the final 2.1 innings and did not allow a run while striking out two. Elyse Cuttic (2-13) took the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings.
The Leopards (11-25) travel to Marist on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader and then close out Patriot League play on Saturday and Sunday at Holy Cross.
