EASTON, Pa. ÃÆ'Æ’¢ÃÆ'¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡¬ÃÆ'¢Ã¢â€š¬Ã…â€Å" The offense was clicking for the Lafayette field hockey team this weekend, backing up a 4-0 victory on Friday at Fairfield with a 4-1 win over Drexel at home on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Grace Angelella is officially rolling as well, scoring her second and third goals of her young career in Sunday's win. Sophomore Sam Di Maio posted two assists, while senior Ellen Colbourne and sophomore Caroline Turnbull were the other goal-scorers for the Maroon and White.
Sophomore Sarah Park earned her third win of the season, making two saves on the afternoon. The victory moves Lafayette to 3-1 on the year overall heading into conference play.
Working down the right side in the game's 18th minute, Colbourne found DiMaio to the right side of the cage. Rather than taking a shot through a defender, Di Maio slid a pass across the front of goal, finding Angelella for an easy finish and a 1-0 lead.
The duo connected again in the 21st minute on a similar play as Di Maio worked into space next to goal and a cross hit Angelella's stick and into the back of the cage. The defense remained strong and Lafayette cruised into the halftime break with a 2-0 advantage.
The game was put out of reach midway through the second stanza when a long pass found the stick of freshman Audrey Sawers. The rookie slapped a shot on target and Colbourne deflected it in front into the left side.
Turnbull scored off a corner and the lone Drexel goal was also off a corner chance, but those were just number changes in a lop-sided 4-1 final. Lafayette held the advantage in shots, 15-5, and corners, 8-4.
The Leopards open up conference play in their next tilt, hosting Colgate at Rappolt Field on Saturday at 12 p.m.
