HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Lafayette field hockey team earned its second win of the young season, defeating Appalachian State 2-1 in Harrisonburg, Va. on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Caroline Turnbull opened the scoring in the ninth minute of the contest, and senior tri-captain Cody Hunsicker added another in the 53rd minute to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead. Appalachian State got on the board five minutes later, but that was all they could muster as Lafayette held on to win by a final score of 2-1.
Turnbull opened the scoring for the game in the ninth minute of the contest. After an Appalachian State foul led to a corner, the sophomore made the Mountaineers pay for their misstep. After Hunsicker saw her initial attempt turned away by the goalkeeper, Turnbull collected the ball and fired it in to the cage to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers turned up the pressure to close out the first half of action, but the Leopards did not budge. Sarah Park earned five of her seven saves in the opening frame, helping the Maroon and White head into the halftime break with their 1-0 lead.
The second half opened with both sides applying strong offensive pressure. Lafayette broke through first in the 53rd minute, this time courtesy of Hunsicker. Fellow tri-captain Ellen Colbourne sent the ball into the circle from a corner. Cameron Costello stopped the ball perfectly and Hunsicker did not miss, as the senior beat the Mountaineers goalkeeper to extend Lafayette's lead to 2-0.
Appalachian State got on the board five minutes later, taking advantage of a Lafayette foul. After Park turned away the initial attempt off the corner, the Mountaineers pounced on the ball and sent one into the top of the cage to bring the score to 2-1, where it would stand for the remainder of the contest.
Lafayette outshout Appalachian State 20-14 overall, and put more attempts on frame, holding a 10-8 advantage. Corners were 10-6 in favor of the Leopards.
The Maroon and White have a quick turnaround as they battle JMU in Harrisonburg, Va. on Sunday at 2 p.m.
