Swimming and Diving Kick Off Season At The Leopard Invitational

Men and Women Use Strong Performances for Big Day

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette swimming and diving team opened their season today at home in the Leopard Invitation.

Head coach, James Dailey thought the team got off to a great start, saying, "It felt great to get the competitive season under way.  We've been training since August 27th and it feels good to do something other than train all the time."

Dailey also added that, "A relay meet is a great chance for everyone especially the first years to compete and not be overwhelmed with a dual meet score and who wins the meet. I am surprised by how well all of the student-athletes competed.  Most everyone swam 4 of 11 events and had the chance to race some tough competition."

Starting off in the mixed 400-yard freestyle relay, Lafayette placed second and third in the respected event. Finishing second was the team of freshman Emily Wilson, senior Kyle Doherty, junior Anne Marie Mozrall, and junior Bryce Currie. Following them, the foursome of junior Mary Zimmerman, sophomore Chris Veatch, senior Julia Hall, and sophomore Ethan Miller took home third.

In the women's 400-yard medley relay, the women Leopards took home first, second, and third place in the event. The winning team consisted of freshman Tara Leininger, freshman Grace Pasco, freshman Elena Uttaro, and sophomore Emma Piascik, finishing in 4:21.97. In the same event on the men's side, the Leopards took home third place with a team of Taylor Duque Schumacher, Kyle Goodwill, Ryan van Dijk, and the aforementioned Currie.

Both the men and women also took home first place in the 400-yard backstroke relay. Leading the team for the men were senior Noah Decker, sophomore Tanner McFarland, freshman Naoki Nomura, and sophomore Garrison Mueller. For the women, senior Faye Melekos, senior Olivia Wootton, freshman Mallory Owyoung, and freshman Emily Tuchman led the charge.

Ending the day for the Leopards was the mixed 200-yard freestyle relay, in which the team took home first place as well. Leading the team to victory was the same foursome of Wilson, Doherty, Mozrall, and Currie.

The Leopards return to action on October 20th, as they head to Loyola for an away meet.
