Homecoming Weekend Brings Hoyas to the Hill

Lafayette vs. Georgetown game notes

The Match-Up: The Leopards are rested after a bye date Oct. 6 and return to action on Saturday, hosting Georgetown on Homecoming Weekend on College Hill. The game can be seen on the Lafayette Sports Network on RCN-4 and WBPH-60 and on GoLeopards.com.

Taking Time Out: The members of the Leopards' freshman class used their fall break time off on Monday to help serve meals at Safe Harbor in Easton.

Coming off a W: Senior RB CJ Amill scored three touchdowns to lead Lafayette to its first win of the season, 31-24 over Central Connecticut State on Sept. 29. Amill's decisive score, a 23-yard run, came with 33 seconds left to clinch the victory. The last-minute win occurred 364 days after the Leopards' most recent last-minute win on Sept. 30, 2017 when Jeffrey Kordenbrock booted a 43-yard field goal as time expired to beat Holy Cross 10-7.

3 TD's For 2: CJ Amill scored on a run of 11 yards just before halftime before punching in his game-winning score. It was his first touchdown of the day that drew the most attention, as he ripped off a 57-yard punt return for touchdown 10 minutes into the game. It was the Leopards first punt return for touchdown since Sept. 1, 2007, when Shaun Adair returned a kick 78 yards to the house vs. Marist.
Amill has been a key special teams contributor during his career. In 2017, he was an All-Patriot League selection at return specialist, finishing with 558 kick return yards, the eighth most in a season at Lafayette. He managed a 96-yard kickoff return vs. Lehigh.
The Youngstown, Ohio native earned both Patriot League Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career.

Bursting Onto The Scene: Until the Central Connecticut State game, Chris Granjean was flying well below the proverbial radar, appearing on several special teams units and occasionally on offense. That changed vs. CCSU when he made the first six catches of his career to rack up 104 receiving yards while carrying the ball twice for 16 yards.

Conference Leader: QB Sean O'Malley leads the Patriot League in completions per game (17.8) and ranks second in passing yards per game (184.0) behind Georgetown's Gunther Johnson (188.7). He is coming off a 30-of-41 game when he threw for a career-best 328 yards.

Receiving For Revere: Soph. WR Quinn Revere had a career-high 10 receptions vs. Central Connecticut State, totalling 86 yards as one of eight receivers used by QB Sean O'Malley. Revere leads the team with 20 receptions and ranks third in the Patriot League for catches per game (4.0).

Third Down: The Leopards came through when it mattered against CCSU, converting 10-of-16 (63 percent) third-down opportunities while stopping the Blue Devils on 8-of-13. QB Sean O'Malley completed six of seven pass attempts on third down.

Kick-off Returns: Lafayette is ranked 28th nationally and second in the Patriot League for kick-off returns, averaging 24.2 yards per try. J.J. Younger averages 26.9 yards per return and is ranked 18th in the nation, while CJ Amill checks in at 20.7 yards per return.

Moving Up: With 10 completions at No. 24 Colgate, soph. QB Sean O'Malley moved into ninth place at Lafayette for career completions (330). He supplanted Andrew Shoop '13 (293 | 2010-12) and next will look to move past Shawn McHale '97 (386 | 1994-96).
In terms of career passing yards, O'Malley needs 35 yards to surpass Ed Baker '70 (2921 | 1967-69) for 10th place.

Fresh Faces On the Depth Chart: There have been 12 freshmen listed on the depth chart on offense, defense and special teams. Of that dozen players, four (DT Ian Grayson, DE Malik Hamm, OL Joe Grundhoffer, FS Romeo Wykle) have started at least one game.

Flags on the Field: Lafayette has shown discipline when it comes to penalties. The Leopards are averaging just 3.2 penalties per game (second in the nation) for 32.6 yards per game (fourth in the nation). Lafayette was not whistled for a penalty against Monmouth, the first time it was flag free since Nov. 18, 2006 vs. Lehigh.

The Garrett Era: John Garrett is in his second season as the head coach of the Lafayette Leopards. Garrett took over the coaching reins on Dec. 21, 2016 and saw Lafayette register a third-place finish in the conference in 2017. Garrett has more than 25 years of coaching experience at the NFL, NCAA FBS and NCAA FCS levels. Offensive coordinator stints at Richmond and Oregon State preceded his arrival on College Hill.
