EASTON, Pa. - It wasn't difficult to score for either side on Thursday evening at Fisher Stadium, but Binghamton made enough defensive plays to stop any chance at a comeback from the Lafayette women's lacrosse team in its home opener as the Leopards fell by a 20-13 score.
Goals came early and often for the visiting Bearcats, jumping out to an 8-1 lead in less than 12 minutes. From there, the Leopards tried to trim the deficit, but it was too much to overcome, falling to 0-2 on the season.
Junior Jane Kirby led four multi-goal scorers for Lafayette with four markers on the night, while classmates Emma Novick and Hannah Davey tallied three and two, respectively, and sophomore Bella Alampi netted a career-high three scores. Novick and Davey also added an assist each and senior co-captain Kristin Schaen rounded out the offense with her first goal of the year.
Lafayette fought back from the early deficit to cut the Binghamton lead to five at the halftime break on a goal each from Novick and Davey in the final four minutes. A Kirby score to open the second half off a Novick feed brought the Maroon and White within four, the closest their comeback bid would get.
Five straight off Bearcat sticks over the next 10 minutes moved the visiting lead out to nine at 15-6 with 18:50 to go. From there, the two teams traded tallies throughout the remainder of the clock with Binghamton hanging on for the 20-13 final.
The Bearcats led in shots by a 34-29 margin and draw controls finished at 17 apiece. Emma Jehle picked up the win, making six saves in her 30 minutes of action, while Lafayette used three different goalies throughout the course of the contest, with senior co-captain Anna Raymond suffering defeat with nine goals allowed and four saves in 24:28 of game time.
In the midst of five straight at Fisher Stadium, the Leopards are back in action on Sunday, hosting Temple at 1 p.m.
