ALBANY, N.Y. - A six-goal run on either side of the halftime intermission changed the game for the Lafayette women's lacrosse team in its tilt at Siena on Wednesday afternoon as the Saints opened up a six-goal lead and held on, defeating the Leopards by a 15-11 score.
The two teams played the first 17 minutes evenly, trading four goals apiece, with three of the Leopards' tallies coming off the stick of junior Jane Kirby. Siena's score at 9:10 sparked a six-goal run, though, as the Saints went up by an 8-4 score at the break and a 10-4 advantage with 22:51 to play.
Lafayette was able to refocus with back-to-back scores from senior co-captain Kristin Schaen and junior Hannah Davey, but the Saints answered that swing with two of their own to thwart the comeback bid. From there, the clock moved too fast for another comeback effort as Siena saw it out to the final buzzer by a final of 15-11.
The loss drops the Leopards back under the .500 mark on the year at 3-4 headed into Patriot League play. Siena improves to 3-3 on its season with the victory.
Lafayette rotated through freshman Quinn Lacy and senior co-captain Anna Raymond between the pipes, but they were able to make just two combined saves on the day. Lacy suffered her first collegiate defeat, moving her record to 3-1 on the season. On the other side, Sammy Horton was excellent for the Saints, allowing 11 goals and stopping nine Lafayette shots on goal for the win.
Kirby and classmate Emma Novick led the Leopards offensively with four goals apiece, while Schaen added a pair and Davey scored the other. Kirby moved her career scoring number to 87, just 13 away from becoming the second Leopard player, along with Novick, to earn their 100th career goal this season.
Lafayette led in shots, 36-26, but couldn't convert around the cage when it counted. Siena won 16 ground balls to Lafayette's 14, and the Maroon and White won the draw control battle by a 16-12 margin.
Next up for the Maroon and White is the start of Patriot League play on the road. The Leopards will travel to Worcester, Mass. for a meeting with Holy Cross on Saturday at 1 p.m.
