Stein, Lacy Sneak Leopards Past American

April 25, 2018

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Freshman Anna Stein cut to the inside on a defender and beat American goalie Fiona Geier with one second left on the clock as the Lafayette women's lacrosse team eked out a 13-12 victory in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday afternoon.

It was fitting that Stein finished off the victory as the goal capped off the best game of her rookie campaign. The Darien, Conn. native finished the day with seven points on four goals and three assists, powering the Leopards on the offensive end.

Classmate Quinn Lacy was a difference-maker as well between the pipes, making 12 saves on the day, including a number of key stops down the stretch. Lacy improves to 5-8 in her inaugural season on College Hill, boasting double-digit save numbers for the third time this spring.

Lafayette began the game on the right foot, jumping out to a comfortable 7-2 advantage on an Emma Novick unassisted tally with 9:12 to play in the opening half. However, American responded with the final five goals in the half to tie it up into the halftime break, 7-7.

The Eagles took their first lead of the game less than a minute into the second stanza and doubled that advantage with a 9-7 edge and 26 minutes left. Lafayette re-focused with a pair from Jane Kirby and Bella Alampi to tie it at 9-9 and the game never moved out of a one-goal margin for either side from that point forward.

That being said, the Leopards stayed on the back foot until the final seconds, needing to respond on two different occasions to answer American goals and keep the game tied. Following an Eagles tally with 1:06 on the clock, Lafayette won a draw control and Stein found Novick to knot it at 10-10 with 19 seconds left. Then, after another win in the circle, Stein took advantage of her opportunity to win it by a 13-12 final.

Joining the freshman on the offensive side was Kirby, who netted a hat trick and moved over the 50-goal mark for her second straight season. Alampi also tallied three goals, while Novick finished with two and Kristin Schaen added one with an assist.

Shots and ground balls both went American's way by 35-30 and 21-18 margins, but Lafayette was more disciplined, committing just seven fouls compared to 17 from the home side. The victory moves the Leopards to 5-11 on the year overall and 2-6 in Patriot League action.

The Maroon and White close out their 2018 campaign on Saturday, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y. for the season finale with Colgate at 1 p.m.
