WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team couldn't hang on to an 8-5 lead through the final 12:44 of regulation and the overtime period in Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 10-9 contest in heartbreaking fashion to Holy Cross.
The Leopards carried an advantage in the game through each of the first three quarters, up 3-1 after one, 6-4 after two and 7-5 after three. They began the fourth with a tally as well, but the Crusaders immediately swung momentum with four straight goals to take a 9-8 lead with 3:52 to go.
Lafayette didn't go away then, though, as senior co-captain Matt Close ripped one into the back of the net with 1:51 remaining to tie it up again at 9-9 and ultimately force the extra period. In overtime, Holy Cross won the faceoff and took advantage as Kevin Kodzis beat Lafayette sophomore goalie Wes Moshier to win it.
The loss drops the Maroon and White to 3-10 overall on the season and 0-6 in Patriot League play. Holy Cross picks up its first conference victory of the year at 1-5 in Patriot League action and moves its overall mark to 3-8.
Conor Walters had another stellar game on the offensive end for Lafayette, leading the way with two goals and two assists. Freshman John Natoli and sophomore Seth Obadia each tallied two goals as well, respectively, while senior co-captain James Roberts added a goal and an assist and rookie Bryan Hess chipped in with three helpers.
Moshier, making his second start of the season and coming off a victory over Monmouth on Tuesday, stopped nine shots between the pipes for the Maroon and White. Defensively, Sean Andrews forced three Holy Cross turnovers and the Leopards got two ground balls apiece from Jason Corcoran, Andrews, Jake Korus and Hess.
Holy Cross held a healthy advantage in shots, 43-23, and slim edges in ground balls, 24-21 and faceoffs, 13-9. Lafayette committed 18 turnovers on the afternoon and was able to force just 11 from the home side.
The Leopards remain on the road for their next conference tilt on Friday, traveling to Lewisburg, Pa. for a meeting with Bucknell at 7:30 p.m.
