No. 10 Lafayette Faces No. 2 American in PL Quarterfinal

For the second straight season, the Leopards meet the Eagles in D.C. in the Patriot League Quarterfinal

OPENING TIP
- The Leopards travel to No. 2 American for to take on the Eagles in the Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinal for the second-straight season.
 
- Senior Nia Holland made just her second field goal of the season with 3.7 seconds left to put Lafayette ahead of Army and advance to the second round by a 63-61 final.
 
- Sophomore Natalie Kucowski was named the Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Year, the first in school history, posting a league-best 69 rejections and 2.4 blocks per game in the regular season.
 
- Last time out, sophomore Natalie Kucowski led all scorers with 24 points and 10 rebounds, her 15th double-double of the season.
 
- The winner of Lafayette, American will advance to the Patriot League Tournament Semifinal Thursday, taking on the winner of Lehigh and Colgate.
 
Scouting American
The Eagles clinched a share of the Patriot League regular season title and hold the two-seed in the Patriot League Tournament, finishing with a 16-2 conference record.
 
American's only two losses in conference have been to Bucknell and it has claimed 16 of its last 17 games heading into the postseason.
 
Cecily Carl was selected as the Patriot League's player of the year, as she was third in the conference in scoring at 15.2 ppg.
 
The Eagles placed four players on an All-League team.
 
In her sixth season, American is led by head coach Megan Gebbia.
 
All-Time Series
The matchup dates back to the 1981-82 season with American holding a 41-7 advantage overall.
 
American has won the last five meetings, including the quarterfinal last season.
 
Last Meeting
American pulled away late, making 11-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter to defeat Lafayette, 67-57, in Easton.
 
Carl led all scorers with 24 points and two other Eagles joined her in double-figures.
 
Natalie Kucowski and Alex Cantwell each had 15 for Lafayette.
 
The Leopards have been tied or held the lead with American in each meeting this season.
 
Defensive Player of the Year
The Patriot League announce on Friday that sophomore Natalie Kucowski is the conference's Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocked shots and blocks per game. She is the first player in program history to receive the award.
 
Not Just a Defender
Kucowski was also named to the Patriot League Second-Team after being just 1-of-3 players in the conference to average a double-double in the regular season.  
 
Hey Nia!
Senior guard Nia Holland is healthy again, just at the right time for the Leopards. She made her first appearance of the season against American, getting the starting nod on Senior Day after missing the first 25 games due to injury.
 
She made just her second field goal of the season with 3.5 seconds left to push Lafayette past Army in the opening round of the Patriot League Tournament and played a serious role in the Leopards committing just four turnovers in the game.  Holland finished with seven points.
 
Rebounding Crown
At Lehigh, Kucowski reset the Lafayette single-season rebounds record, besting her freshman year total of 309.
 
Currently, she is sitting at 336 rebounds in 2018-19 and is the only player in Lafayette history to have two 300-plus rebound seasons. 
 
On the Doorstep
While Lafayette has two double-digit losses to the defending Patriot League champions this season, the Leopards have been tied or held the lead through three periods in both meetings.
 
No. 10, No Problem
The Leopards are no strangers to the first round of the Patriot League Tournament and  have won three of their last four first-round games come tourney time. They are also 2-0 in first round games as the 10-seed.
 
Streak Snapped
Lafayette was on an 11-game losing skid to close the regular season. It also had lost the last nine meetings to Army and the last 19 games in West Point.
 
Freeland Facilitating
Sophomore Drew Freeland has matched or bested her career high in assists in back-to-back games. In the regular-season finale, she dished out four assists against Colgate, a mark she has hit five times. At Army, she had seven assists, including five in the first half.
 
Martino's Streaking
Sophomore Olivia Martino has connected on 10 3-pointers in her last two games. She made a career-high six 3-pointers in the regular-season finale against Colgate for a career-best 22 points. She made her first four 3-point attempts of the night and followed it up with four 3-balls at Army in the Patriot League opening round.
 
Efficiency From Deep
Along with climbing the 3-point field goals chart, Martino and Freeland would rank No. 1 and 2, respectively, on the all-time 3-point field goal percentage list. Martino is shooting 38 percent from beyond the arc in her career and Martino is a 36 percent career shooter from deep.
 
The current No. 1 is Anna Ptasinski '18 who shot 39 percent a season ago. In her career, she shot 36 percent and hit 159, ranking third in program history.
 
Century-Mark Rejections
Kucowski recorded two blocked shots at Navy for 100 rejections in her Lafayette career. She is just the fifth Leopard ever to compile 100-plus blocks in her College Hill career. At Boston U., she matched her career high with six blocks.
 
Century-Mark Games
Senior Alex Cantwell played her 100th career game at Navy donning the Maroon and White. She is the 53rd player in program history to join the 100-games played club, joining her mother, Theresa O'Connell, who played 113 games for Lafayette.
