Brown and Columbia Hand Leopards Losses on Day 2

Lafayette to play one game vs. Providence on Sunday

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Day two of the USF Softball Series saw Brown and Columbia handle the Leopards 11-3 and 10-2 losses.

Brown scored six runs over the first three innings in game one. The Leopards gave up three runs on four hits and a couple of errors in the top of the first. Two more Leopard errors in the second handed Brown a 4-0 lead.

Lafayette got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Ellen McDonnell (2-for-2) delivered a bases-loaded single and then Paige Grover took one for the team with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Penn scored two runs apiece in the third and fourth innings and then closed out things with three in the seventh. Lafayette added a run in the fourth when Brooke Wensel tripled to lead off the inning and scored via Erin Scott's groundout.

Kinzi Van Wyk surrendered eight runs (four earned) on eight hits over 3.1 innings in the loss. Lauren Innerst gathered the win, allowing three runs on eight hits.

Columbia scored four runs in the second inning and that proved to be enough offense in a 10-2 final in five innings.

It was the Leopards who scored first in that second inning. Maddie Wensel led off with a single back through the box. A passed ball put her in scoring position before Malori Pojar came through with an RBI-single down the line for the 1-0 lead.

The Lions answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame, three of which came on Amanda Nishihira's home run as Columbia led 4-1.

The fourth inning decided the game. Lafayette pulled within 5-2 in the top of the inning following, McDonnell's RBI single. In the bottom half, Columbia (5-9) put it away with five runs on four hits.

Columbia starter Alexa Pinarski limited Lafayette to two runs on six hits (all singles) with a pair of K's on the afternoon. Her Lafayette counterpart, Stacy Gordon, allowed 10 runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in the loss.

Lafayette (2-14) plays only one game on Sunday, facing Providence at 9 a.m.
