Leopards Earn Split With FDU, Taking Game One 3-2

Scott comes through with game-winning hit in ninth inning

HACKENSACK, N.J. – Erin Scott connected for a two-out single in the top of the ninth inning to propel Lafayette to a 3-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in game one of a Wednesday non-league doubleheader.

Scott, who was playing less than an hour from her hometown of Sparta, N.J., plated Brooke Wensel who set the stage with a one-out double in the second extra inning. Scott was for 2-for-3 with a run scored in the opener.

The Leopards manufactured the first run of game one in the fourth inning. Natasha Miner, who turned in a 13-pitch at bat her first time up, reached second on an error by the shortstop. Paige Grover's ground ball advanced her to third and Wensel did the rest with a deep sac fly for the 1-0 lead.

The lead did not last for long as the second batter of the bottom of the fifth inning, Reanna Cervantes, hit a solo home run to knot the game at 1-1.

The Leopards registered their first hit of the game in the sixth inning when Scott singled to left. She promptly stole second to get into scoring position. Kaitlyn Rarick singled Scott to third and she scored on an Ellen McDonnell groundout that gave Lafayette a 2-1 advantage.

FDU (13-32) tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of singles, sending the game to extra innings.

Leopard starter Stacy Gordon retired FDU in order in the eighth inning, and worked past a lead-off single in the ninth to capture the circle victory. She struck out nine, allowing two runs on two hits over nine innings.

In game two, Fairleigh Dickinson scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to break open a one-run game and capture a 4-2 final.

Lafayette and FDU traded runs in the first. Scott continued with her hot bat, smoking a two-out double that scored Miner (3-for-4) who had reached on a lead-off single. The hosts tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half on a two-out single by Cervantes.

FDU scored a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, Lafayette managed to get a force out at home for the second out. But the next batter, Amarys Miller-Godsey, hit a two-run double for the 4-1 lead.

Lafayette battled to the end, scoring a run in seventh. Kinzi Van Wyk, who drew a one-out walk, scored on Miner's single through the right side of the infield. Erica Johnson retired the next two batters to end the game.

Van Wyk allowed three earned runs on six hits over six innings in the loss, while Courtney Mahoney secured the win after surrendering one run over five innings before giving way to Johnson.

Lafayette (8-32-1) returns to Patriot League play this weekend with a three-game series at Colgate. First pitch each day is slated for noon.
