Woolston Named PL Defensive Player of the Week

Rookie defender key cog in 8-0 shutout victory on Saturday

Box Score CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman Sydney Woolston of the Lafayette field hockey team was selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.

Woolston played a critical part in a defensive unit that posted an 8-0 shutout win over Holy Cross in the league opener on Saturday afternoon. The rookie from Berlin, New Jersey tallied a defensive save in the contest and assisted in a unit that gave up just two shots on goal in the matchup.

"Sydney has been a fantastic addition to our defensive unit. Her athleticism, speed and tenacity make her a very difficult defender to come up against," head coach Jennifer Stone said. "Although the attack speaks for itself, this Saturday's win was every bit a defensive victory as well. Sydney's defensive save proved to be an important one for the team. She's eager, an athlete and a true competitor."

In addition to Woolston's honor, sophomore Molly McAndrew and senior Sarah Park were also lauded with honorable-mention status this week. McAndrew scored a pair of goals and added an assist on Saturday, while Park made one save in her third win of the year between the pipes.

The Leopards return to action this afternoon with a road tilt at Cornell at 4 p.m.
