Box Score CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Freshman
Sydney Woolston of the Lafayette field hockey team was selected as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
Â
Woolston played a critical part in a defensive unit that posted an 8-0 shutout win over Holy Cross in the league opener on Saturday afternoon. The rookie from Berlin, New Jersey tallied a defensive save in the contest and assisted in a unit that gave up just two shots on goal in the matchup.
Â
"Sydney has been a fantastic addition to our defensive unit. Her athleticism, speed and tenacity make her a very difficult defender to come up against," head coach
Jennifer Stone said. "Although the attack speaks for itself, this Saturday's win was every bit a defensive victory as well. Sydney's defensive save proved to be an important one for the team. She's eager, an athlete and a true competitor."
Â
In addition to Woolston's honor, sophomore
Molly McAndrew and senior
Sarah Park were also lauded with honorable-mention status this week. McAndrew scored a pair of goals and added an assist on Saturday, while Park made one save in her third win of the year between the pipes.
