Sawers, Steps to Lead Five-Member Field Hockey Leadership Council

Senior co-captains guiding Leopards through unorthodox 2020-21 campaign

EASTON, Pa. – Seniors Audrey Sawers and Anna Steps were selected as co-captains for the 2020-21 Lafayette field hockey team, head coach Jennifer Stone announced on Thursday. Sawers and Steps are joined by classmate Sophie Carr and juniors Mary Gould and Kara Tiedtke on a five-member leadership council that will help the Maroon and White navigate through an unprecedented 2020-21 season.

"Despite the many obstacles these times have presented to our team, we have still found unique opportunities to grow. The values that we share within our team have helped all of us to see a goal in the future. To believe, that soon enough, we will have the opportunity to be together, compete and reach for a Patriot League championship," the council said in a joint statement. "Our team has been so invested in staying connected when apart and the commitment to our program of every player and our coaches has been incredible."

The Patriot League announced on July 13 the decision that teams will not engage in competition this fall. In that statement, the league stated the "possibility of conducting fall sport competition and championships in the second semester," though, so Sawers, Steps and their fellow leaders will need to keep the team prepared for that potential reality.

A member of the team's leadership council a season ago, Sawers started 19 of the 20 contests, scoring three goals and adding two assists to help her team to the Patriot League championship game. Her most significant moment came in the Patriot League semifinal, scoring the lone goal of the contest in the 53rd minute to send the Leopards to the title game with a 1-0 victory over Bucknell.

Steps, a 2019 All-Patriot League Second Team and All-Tournament Team selection, also served on the leadership council last season. The Hamburg, Germany native scored three goals and added seven assists in 2019, including three helpers in the win over Colgate on Sept. 28 and another in the title game defeat to American on Nov. 10.

Carr and Gould made 19 and 18 appearances, respectively, last season, while Tiedtke sat out due to injury. Carr scored her lone goal of the year in a win over Holy Cross on Sept. 21.
