Week Two Takes Leopards to William and Mary

Lafayette games notes vs. William and Mary

The Match-Up: Lafayette remains on the road for week two of the 2021 fall season, traveling to Williamsburg, Va. to face William and Mary on Saturday at 6 p.m. The teams last played in 2019 and have faced each other five times since 2012 with the CAA foe holding a 4-1 advantage.

22's Grand Plateau: With 22 yards on the ground, No. 22 Selwyn Simpson reached 1,000 for his career. Simpson led the team in rushing in 2017 and 2019 and has 1,005 career yards. 

FBS Foes: Lafayette and William and Mary both played FBS foes in week one. The  Leopards dropped a 35-14 decision in the first-ever meeting with the Mountain West's Air Force in the Leopards' 140 seasons of football. William and Mary lost a 43-0 final to the ACC's Virginia in the 38th meeting between the in-state foes. 
    Lafayette played Army in 2016 and was slated to play Navy in 2020 before COVID. Temple and Duke are the FBS foes on the ledger for the Leopards in 2022 and 2023, respectively. 

Career Day For JUJU: Junior WR Julius Young had a career day at Air Force, making nine catches for 146 yards and a TD. Young had four receptions of 15 yards or longer including a 43-yard catch in the fourth quarter. Young also had a pair of 23-yard catches, including a second-quarter grab for the Leopards' first score of the game.

Under Center?: In the opener, Lafayette used three quarterbacks. Coming into that game, none had thrown a collegiate pass in a game. Soph. Rent Montie had the advantage of a year in Garrett's system. The Palm Harbor, Fla. native was an All-State selection out of Clearwater High School where he threw for 5,133 yards (356-of-609) for 55 touchdowns in his career.
    Soph. Aaron Angelos had the benefit of a redshirt season at Washington State before transferring to Lafayette in the summer of 2021. Angelos was an All-Inter-Academic League selection out of Philadelphia, completing 118-of-212 for 1,900 yards and 27 touchdowns at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.
    The final name in the mix is senior Shane Davis. Davis was the offensive scout team MVP following the 2021 spring season. 
    Angelos had the start at Air Force, completing 11-of-17 for 157 yards, while Montie was 7-of-11 for 86 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Davis appeared in one offensive series and threw one pass.

Major Contributions: Senior ILB Major Jordan checked in with a career-high 15 tackles at Air Force. The Engineering major led the team in tackles his last two seasons and has been one of the defense's most consistent contributors
    In the spring 2021 season, he had a team-best 21 stops, including 2.5 tackles for loss. He also led the defensive effort in 2019 with a team-high 112 stops (31 more than any teammate) and finished 26th in the nation in total tackles. For the 2019 season he had five games with double-digit tackles.

Year Five In The Garrett Era: John Garrett is in his fifth season at Lafayette. Garrett took over the coaching reins on Dec. 21, 2016. He guided Lafayette to a pair of 3-8 campaigns in 2017 and 2018, a 4-8 mark in 2019 before a 2-1 clip in the spring 2021 campaign. Lafayette registered a third-place conference finish in 2017 (3-3) and a fourth-place finish in 2018 (2-4) before a break through with a second-place finish in 2019 when Lafayette won four of its last five games. The Leopards finished second in the Patriot League south division in the spring 2021 season.
    Garrett has more than 25 years of coaching experience at the NFL, NCAA FBS and NCAA FCS levels. Offensive coordinator stints at Richmond and Oregon State preceded his hiring.

That Guy Looks Familiar: Cole Northrup '21 is playing a graduate season at William and Mary. Northrup, who is wearing No. 18 for the Tribe, saw action in nine games for the Leopards, earning starts in four contests, including all three games in the 2021 spring season. In 2021, the quarterback completed 48-of-77 passes for 602 yards with four touchdowns. Northrup's first career start came at William and Mary in the 2019 season opener. 
    John Garrett also faces former assistant coach Gordie Sammis on Saturday. Sammis spent 2017-18 as the Leopards' offensive line coach and is currently the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at William and Mary. Garrett and W&M coach Mike London worked on the Virginia staff together with Garrett coaching wide receivers and London the defensive line.

Preseason Poll: The Leopards were picked third in the Patriot League preseason poll. With 44 points, Lafayette was slotted behind reigning champ Holy Cross (71) and Fordham (63) and ahead of Lehigh (35), Bucknell (30), Georgetown (28) and Colgate (23).

The Opponent: William and Mary is 0-1 after dropping the opener to FBS in-state foe Virginia, 43-0, in week one. All starters, on both sides of the ball, return from a 2021 spring season when W&M was 1-2. The Tribe managed a win over Elon with losses to Richmond and James Madison. 
    The Tribe, which has nine players from Pennsylvania, has been picked 11th in the CAA Preseason Poll.
     Junior QB Hollis Mathis returns as the quarterback. He completed 31-of-51 for 379 yards and two touchdowns in the spring and also carried 20 times for 92 yards and a touchdown. In the opener, the Pittsburgh native completed 9-of-15 for 83 yards and also had six carries for 29 yards. 
    Senior WR Cole Blackman was the top pass catcher in the spring with 12 grabs for 194 yards and a TD.  
    On the defensive side of things, senior Will Kiely is an All-CAA defensive end. The Downingtown, Pa. native had 14 tackles in 2021 and a pair of tackles with a sack in the opener at Virginia. 
    W&M is coached by Mike London who is in his third season.
